INTERVIEW WITH HEAD OF I-BIZ TEAM,CDR MASSEE, AT DBX BAGHDAD 2008 (ORGANIZED BY IACCI)

2009-01-18

In an interview by IACCI s Free Trade correspondent on 17th December 2008 at BIAP s Convention Center on IACCI s DBX Baghdad Show, CDR Massee, responsible for I-BIZ Program, elaborated on this unique opportunity for Iraqis to set up businesses in 11 Coalition bases Iraq-wide, in implementation of “Iraq First” Scheme:

“The Bases of the Coalition Forces are self-sufficient. However, after the prevalence of security all over Iraq in 2007, we contemplated to have Iraqis participate in rendering services and basic wares to our 11 bases all over Iraq, rather than reliance on those by neighboring countries and elsewhere. This measure is in conformity with our concept Iraq First .

We offer land adjoining to our bases that enjoy security to qualified applicants in order to set up their businesses. Such businesses may be concrete factories, industrial workshops, vehicles service stations, general purpose stores. We do not fund these projects; we only offer our help and expertise, inclusive of training sessions in their craft to those willing to improve their performance.

The qualified applicants sign a 1-year contract, renewable upon our approval. There is no fixed duration for our Program. The works and contracts are on-going. We are in continuous expansion; e.g. Victory Base covers an area of 200 hectares. We wish to create a stable private sector society in theses bases when the time comes for our departure.

We are pleased by b this Program by virtue of the enthusiasm rendered by Iraqis for it as manifested by the great number of applications. We currently have 92 industrial companies operating in our bases. We aspire to double this number

We do not encourage competition. As such, we only allow a single craft, factory or facility in any one base.”
